Mutants

According to Google, I have readers now! Well, I'll try anything once. Welcome!

Over on the right, you'll see I added social networking thingies. Apparently they are all the rage. You should at least check out the On the Bounty facebook page.

In related news, check out the anchor on Blackbeard! Sure, the Queen Anne's Revenge sank 70 years before the Bounty mutiny, but just check out that sucker! That thing looks like it's the SIZE of the original Bounty. Seriously.

Great Capstans in History!

It's time for another installment of everyone's favorite segment, Great Capstans in History!

This (admittedly somewhat ostentatious) capstan is none other than the beating heart of the USS Constitution; the oldest living warship afloat!

I had the pleasure of visiting Old Ironsides last fall and ended up giving an impromptu demonstration on how to properly fire a cannon. And even the Constitution's cannons are fairly famous, among them "Jumping Billy" recently appeared on screen in the film Master and Commander.

The ship is undergoing massive restorations at the moment in preparation for the bicentennial of the War of 1812. You should go visit.

Rapture

I admit that in internet terms this is a pretty old joke, but I couldn't let it go. I'll repent for it later.

Shoals

I imagine navigating a dismasted brig is not at all easy, and might result in some residual bitterness.

You should know that I tested this comic on my wife (as I do all of them) and she immediately quoted me the distance from Ushant to Scilly unprompted. Listen here folks, that's when you know it's love.

Octopus Pie

This comic may not make a lot of sense to you unless you knew what I was referencing.

On the other hand, I think it's funnier to read not knowing I was referencing anything and just wondering why the crew is suddenly calling each other "Eve" and "Lunabelle" and where exactly Bligh is keeping that bird.

In any case, today's comic is a tribute to Meredith Gran's Octopus Pie, and the dialogue is entirely hers. I've been a fan of her stuff for a long time.

Just pick a random strip and read it without looking at the words at all. You can tell exactly what's going on, and have a good idea of what each character is feeling, and what their relationship is to the other characters. I eat that stuff up.

Now try that with On the Bounty. Oops. That's why she's the artist, folks. :s
