Great Capstans in History!

It's time for another installment of everyone's favorite segment, Great Capstans in History!

This (admittedly somewhat ostentatious) capstan is none other than the beating heart of the USS Constitution; the oldest living warship afloat!

I had the pleasure of visiting Old Ironsides last fall and ended up giving an impromptu demonstration on how to properly fire a cannon. And even the Constitution's cannons are fairly famous, among them "Jumping Billy" recently appeared on screen in the film Master and Commander.

The ship is undergoing massive restorations at the moment in preparation for the bicentennial of the War of 1812. You should go visit.
